Acne is the most common issue which affects our skin now. Regardless of what age you’re 15, or 40 acne may affect the appearance of your skin.
Acne is caused by sebaceous glands producing sebum. Sebum clogs the pores and skin or the hair follicle, which creates acne. Grease, dirt, and harsh chemicals can increase and worsen the appearance of acne. Additionally changes in hormone levels, increased stress, certain drugs, and squeezing or popping pimples may exacerbate acne. In Ayurvedic medicine acne is called Youvana pitikas, which means the eruptions of childhood. Most often acne happens at the height of puberty when hormone levels are in continuous change.
Ayuveda states that both chief doshas involved in causing the formation of acne are vata and kapha although blood plays a role also. An imbalance in one of the 3 doshas can have an influence on the rest of the body, which may result in acne. When vata becomes imbalanced because of dietary changes, or eating unhealthy foods that the skin can become irritated and breakout. An imbalance in 1 dosha can lead to aggravation to another doshas, which then could also cause acne. For instance if the pitta dosha becomes aggravated the blood controlled by pitta can cause excess secretions from the skin. If Kapha becomes bloated it may create sebaceous plugs within the pores and hair follicles.
To prevent an imbalance between the doshas there are a number of precautions which can be taken. Preventing hot, fatty and non-vegetarian diets may aggravate the digestive tract therefore irritating the doshas and giving rise to pimples. Eliminate junk food from your diet because although it does not cause acne to occur it may make acne worse. Proper excretion and removal of bowels rids the body of toxins and unwanted fecal matter. Wash your face two times a day with a gentle cleanser. And never forget to wash your hands. It’s habit for people to touch their face. Every time you touch your face the germs on your hands can be moved into the face and cause acne. Keep your hair from your face. Like our hands our hair can collect dirt and perspiration, which can be moved into the face on contact. Always keep your hair clean and washed. Avoid popping, squeezing or picking pimples. Not only can it create a worsening look, you may actually cause more acne to surface because of the spread of germs. Drink loads of water and exercise regularly.
Ayurvedic medicine advocates using herbs, essential oils and spices during their treatment regiments. Skin and acne care is no exception. Ayurveda considers that cleansing and purifying the blood will help balance the doshas and heal acne. Therefore Ayurvedic practitioners recommend herbs that can cleanse the blood and restore beauty and health to the skin, by removing pimples, rashes or skin ailments. Some of the herbs which Ayurveda recommends for acne and skin problems include Neem, Turmeric, Indian sarsaparilla, sandalwood, Indian ginseng, Indian gooseberry, and Lodra.
- Neem has antibacterial, antifungal and blood purifying properties. It’s been proven to be capable of treating skin disorders like acne, psoriasis and eczema. Neem not only raises macrophages but also promotes lymphocytes to react to disease, bacteria and inflammation. Neem should be used on the skin for the fastest results. Grind tender neem leaves turmeric until you have a paste like consistency. Apply the paste to the acne. Allow time to dry. Then wash the face off.
- Haemafine Syrup is an herbal remedy with a number of diverse herbs like Sariva, Karvellak, Manjistha, Nimb patra, Chopchini, Gorakhmundi, Suranjan kadvi, Shinshipa, Bakuchi, Haridra, Syahjeera, Lauh bhasam, Mandura bhasam and Gandhak rasayan. This may be taken to clear the skin of acne while improving the complexion and natural glow.
- Fenugreek can be utilised as an acne treatment because of the anti inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Take fresh methi leaves (Fenugreek leaves) and rinse them. Then grind them until they make a paste. Apply to your face or region of acne. Leave for 10-15 minutes then rinse with warm water. Do this each night to rid your face of acne, pimples and whiteheads.
- Take ripe tomato and grind it until it’s a pulpy mixture. Apply to your face and let it dry, around 45 minutes. Wash it off. This will reduce redness, soreness and relieve gingivitis.
- Mix besan flour (gram flour) with rose water to make a paste and apply it to the face. Allow it to dry then wash off with warm water. This will remove the excess oil in addition to pull out dangerous chemicals, toxins and dirt trapped in pores.
Ayurvedic not only uses herbs as part of its treatment protocols. Ayruvedic medicine maintains the principals of eating a healthy diet, and getting proper amounts of exercise. Therefore it is important to consume fresh produce on a daily basis, between 5-8 servings every day. Additionally drinking 8-15 glasses of water per day to keep the skin hydrated, healthy and glowing. Make certain to include a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise in your daily routine to keep the mind sharp, the body tone and the soul relaxed.
