Coconut and coconut oil

Coconut oil is oil from mature coconuts. It’s been used for food for centuries, but many men and women aren’t aware it may be used externally to combat acne and other skin conditions, such as psoriasis.

Treating acne

The thought that applying oil on the skin could help acne seems absurd at first – many people with acne desire to have less oil in their skin. But it requires over excess sebum to cause acne, which helps to clarify how coconut oil can help with acne.

    • Steam your face by placing a towel on your head and leaning over a bowl of warm water.
    • Massage a little bit of coconut oil in your face.
    • Wring out a facecloth in hot water and place it over your face. This permits the oil to go deep to the skin.

Using coconut oil this way also helps to eliminate acne scars.

The goodness of coconut oil isn’t limited to outside use. It’s also a wonderful friend in the kitchen. Coconut (and its oil) not only tasted great, but it might help acne and your general health.

It helps your body to fight yeast and parasitic infections (both of which are linked to acne). It soothes inflammation and helps to avoid blood sugar spikes. Chronic inflammation and blood sugar levels are the primary factors behind adult acne.

Warning, not for everybody

Though many acne sufferers swear by coconut oil, it is not for everybody. Sometimes it can make your acne worse.

It appears that coconut oil can stimulate the skin glands to make more sebum. This may cause more acne for some people, and particularly if your skin pores are blocked. That’s why it’s important to wash your face thoroughly before applying the oil.

Unfortunately there is no way to know beforehand how your skin responds. So begins slowly and see what happens.


Coconut oil is by no means a be all and end all acne therapy. Please bear in mind that acne is an internal issue. To get more than adult acne permanently one needs to take a holistic approach which takes into consideration your diet, lifestyle and psychological health (anxiety). Coconut oil won’t fix the root cause of acne. But it can help keep your acne under control as you correct the underlying issues.
