From French calebasse, from Spanish calabaza (gourd; pumpkin), possibly from Arabic قَرْعَةٌ يَابِسَةٌ(qarʿatun yābisatun, dry gourd) or directly from its etymon Persian خربزه(xarboze, melon), possibly ultimately from Sanskrit त्रपुस (trapusa, colocynth fruit) (compare Persian تربزه(tarboze, watermelon)).
