From 16th-century parsnepe, from Middle English passenep, a corruption of Old French pasnaie (by influence of Middle English nepe (“turnip”)), from Latin pastinaca (“parsnip, carrot”), from pastinum (“two-pronged fork”); related to Latin pastinō (“to dig up the ground”).
