Having endured with cystic acne from age 12 through 18, I know all too well the pain and disfigurement associated with chronic boils, blackheads and whiteheads. After staining your face with mad, lumpy blobs of red, they leave skin pockmarked and your pores permanently enlarged… and the cycle never ends.
As a teenager, I washed my face every day; slathered benzoyl peroxide creams around itsmeared my skin with alcohol, salycilic acid, oatmeal, sulfuric soap – anything to relieve myself of the curse that plagued me, destroyed my self esteem and forced me to sleep on my back to avoid placing pressure on my bloated cysts and boils. It became fairly evident after a couple of years of this that my acne was an internal problem, and that no amount of topical remedies were planning to penetrate into the tissues of my body and put a stop to the torment.
From The Inside
My dermatologist informed me that my problem was hormone-related, but was unable to prescribe anything – like tetracyclines – which made any difference at all in my acne. Finally, upon turning 18, I took the ultimate pimple treatment, which finally put a stop to the cysts and significantly reduced minor pimple eruptions. The treatment had worked by basically decreasing my sebaceous glands and restricting the amount of sebum to be trapped in my pores resulting in cysts, and over time most of my scars disappeared and my gaping pores diminished in size a little.
A Healthy Diet Agains Acne
What I did not understand was that I could have controlled my acne through simple diet changes, regardless of the fact that most resources I encountered – including my dermatologist – informed me that what a person eats doesn’t have any connection to pimple and cyst outbreaks. But if you think that acne is indeed brought on by internal ailments, and that the quality of the food someone ingests does have a direct impact on how well their body works, why on earth would anyone suggest that food (particularly sugar, milk and meat ) can not cause someone to break out? It’s a fact that some individuals can be morbidly obese and dwell on bon-bons and ice cream yet not possess a pimple in sight, and I imagine that is part of the reason people assume their is not any association between food and acne.
But though we as humans share the same basic wants and anatomical structure, the ways our bodies “cope” with and remove toxins, poisons and non-nutritious foodstuffs are incredibly different from person to person. As an example, some men and women who subsist only on candy bars will store the excess sugar, fat and substances in the kind of fat pockets; a few people will stay relatively lean, but may have poor muscle tone, pallor and oily skin eruptions (this was me); and there’s those who will seem perfectly healthy for years with this diet, but might wind up with any number of long-term ailments later in life like liver disease, blood clots, and even cancer. In my teenage years, my diet has been a mixture of good and bad. After discovering the curative value of fresh vegetable and fruit juices because of their heavy levels of vitamins, enzymes and anti-oxidants, I managed to eventually truly turn my life around without needing a prescription (and possibly dangerous) medication such as Accutane, that might have done more harm than good in the future as it almost removed my body’s overriding way of eliminating excess toxins and compounds – through pimples. And so I, being of an all-or-nothing mentality, did some research, some soul-searching, and plunged in my juice fast. Armed with a inexpensive plastic juicer that was used maybe twice in 20 years (yes, it was old), I spent a ridiculous amount of time daily fighting and forcing this poor imitation of a juicer to extract as much vital juice out of my fruit and veggies, marveling at the amount of moist, wasted vegetable pulp that it left in its wake… but I went through the regular consistently and forced myself to not give up, reading blogs every day about individuals who had experienced juice fasting and a few of the symptoms they experienced, comparing theirs to mine, and educating myself as much as you can on the detoxification procedure. In brief, I experienced hunger/cravings, headaches, exhaustion, cold symptoms (runny nose, coughing, excessive mucus production) and dizziness upon standing for the first couple of times; I developed several skin rashes and had a little acne flare-up, and my bloating and fatigue really worsened initially. I stuck with it and drank lots of water between juice foods, performed daily enemas (that wasn’t fun to get the hang of, but worth it) to accelerate the elimination of toxin from my blood and help alleviate the unpleasant detox symptoms, and even kept a daily journal of my experience (which I will be posting soon) to help keep me motivated throughout the fast. Gradually, my appetite and cravings diminished, in addition to the bloating and fatigue, although the extra mucus and itching remained somewhat longer; and my skin became smoother and tighter, free of pimples, with the blackheads that had dotted my nose consistently for decades even ultimately disappearing. Now I was really stoked on fasting and decided to spend around $200 at a high-powered Champion juicer using a centrifuge specially designed to squeeze and mash every last bit of juice from produce fast and economically. I could juice my create easily in about a minute rather than 15, with no wasted pulp, understanding I had reaped the maximum amount of enzymes and vitamins out of my fruit and veggies with no juice sitting for moments and losing potency because of atmosphere oxidization while I squeezed out the remainder from my juicer.
Ever since, I’ve alternated juice fasts with a nearly completely raw vegan diet, avoiding cooking my meals as much as possible because of the fact that the heating process destroys vital minerals and enzymes and turns them into free radicals inside the body – only more toxin to pump out. I managed to conquer my other addictions too over time, and the combination of fewer toxins being dumped in my body, more healing and detoxifying foods being ingested and my detox channels being enhanced has kept my skin completely free of pimples, whiteheads and blackheads. Along with learning the value of healthy and detox diet, I’ve come to understand a bit more about the food digestion procedure, and that a whole lot of the acne I endured as a child came from the fact I was not digesting my food well. Food that was not being digesting properly was sitting in my gut for too long, fermenting and producing toxins and free radicals which tried to escape my body in the kind of cysts and migraines. I probably had an imbalance of the great flora in my gut because of years of antibiotic treatment for chronic tonsillitis and other ailments as a kid; exactly what I needed was a great probiotic to replenish the valuable stomach bacteria (like lactobacillus and bifidobacterium) in my stomach and intestines which correctly digests food.
Probiotics can be found naturally in yogurt and other cultured products such as kim chee, but it is important to make certain that all dairy products purchased for consumption are organic (to avoid hormones and antibiotics within non-organic milk) and as low in sugar as you can, because bad stomach bacteria such as candida thrives on sugar. Stonyfield Farm is my personal favorite. If you choose the wrong yogurt, the beneficial bacteria naturally present in it’ll be essentially destroyed by the antibiotic material as well as the sugar-fed bad bacteria already present on your gut, which makes it pointless to consume in the interest of balancing your gut flora. It’s not tough to create your own yogurt right in your home with a great probiotic starter (such as Yogourmet) and/or yogurt manufacturer.
My general experience in combating acne (and pretty much any other malady or disease) is that there’s not any quick-fix solution, and any remedy claiming to be a quick fix is going to end up doing more harm than good in the long term one way or another. The only way to permanently restrain something like cystic acne is to make lifestyle changes. You need to know at all times what you are putting into your body’s cells and maintain a check on your poison overload by regular detoxification processes. Even stress can create excessive hormones and free radicals inside the body which may opt to escape through the development of pustules and nodules, so it is also extremely important to relax as much possible at all times and keep stress levels to a minimum – something which would undoubtedly take a complete shift in thinking for many people, because it certainly did for me. I was obviously a high-stress, neurotic character type who made mountains out of molehills on a daily basis, keeping myself in a state of constant agitation and no doubt unintentionally driving my hormone levels throughout the map. But once I began juice fasting and eating correctly, I slowly became more calm in general and developed a higher threshold for anxiety than I’d previously, and this resulted from no conscious effort on my part. I didn’t really meditate or attempt to take things more peacefully – it just naturally came about after I stopped putting bad things into my body and started cleansing up the stored poisons still inside. I now deeply feel that the more severe your acne is, the more you will need to find something awful inside of you out, and it is highly improbable that any topical lotions will do the trick. You must examine your life and determine what needs changing, then put these changes into effect; clear skin is but one of many terrific rewards.
