The nausea and vomiting of early pregnancy were subjects written as early as 2000 BC by the Egyptians. Morning Sickness is one of the most unpleasant effects of pregnancy. The sensation of nausea, even without episodes of nausea, is often experienced during the first 3 months of pregnancy, and with increased symptoms during the third month. The pathological state of hyperemesis gravidarum is more serious and may require hospitalization for intravenous fluid replacement.
Reasons
The reason is unknown. Some believe it can possibly be a vitamin B-6 lack or a low blood glucose level, or hormones running amuck. Others conclude that nausea is a consequence of the placenta situating itself within the uterus during the first trimester. If you’re the individual suffering, you probably don’t care what causes it. You just want relief.
What To Use?
For fast relief of morning sickness, you can inhale Peppermint (Mentha piperita) or Spearmint (Mentha spicata) essential oil. This can bring instant relief.
It is also possible to dilute a few drops of peppermint, spearmint, Melissa (Melissa officinalis) or Lemon (Citrus limon) with a similar number of drops (half and half) of vegetable oil or cream. Use this blend to massage 1-3 drops behind each ear (above the mastoid), or above the solar plexus area.
You may also use a combination of any of these oils falling a total of 4-5 drops in a bowl of about 2 cups of warm water, swishing a cotton washcloth around in the water, wringing it out, and using the fabric for a compress over the gut. The simplest way, of course, would be to have a quick whiff of the essential oil directly from the bottle.
I have to suggest here that these oils should be used with care, and with your doctor’s knowledge while pregnant. Don’t use any essential oil or in large quantities during pregnancy. Although we know of no ill effects, this care is filed mostly because you ought not take chances with anything when you’re pregnant. When using essential oils, I recommend that you’re very conservative, constantly using less instead of more. You might choose to use less instead of more simply because your sense of smell is so sensitive at the moment. Use ONLY the purest therapeutic grade oils. This is quite important. If impure or adulterated oils are used, you may only make the issue worse.
How To Use It?
The safest place to use essential oils would be to the bottom of your toes. Pay particular attention to the reflexology point for the stomach: the place on the bottom of the foot, in the middle of the foot on the interior in accord with the big toe. The acupressure point to alleviate nausea is on the inside of the arm, just above the wrist in line with the long finger.
As it’s name indicates, Morning Sickness often appears in the morning, usually as you get out of bed, but it may be present during the day. The old standby remedy is to continue low-sodium crackers by your mind, and before you get out of bed, eat a cracker, to waylay the nausea. This is the first line of defense.
Other Suggestions
Aside from Essential Oils, here are some suggestions of things you can try when you’re awaiting the next trimester to arrive: Eat frequent small meals and drink a lot of fluids. Most women find it much easier to highlight liquids over solids in this time. Stick to bland foods. This isn’t a time to test out that Mexican or Thai restaurant. Avoid fatty, heavy food. If there’s an odor that bothers you, try to prevent it. Steer clear of alcohol, tobacco, coffee and black tea.
Avoid sudden moves, particularly while in bed. Don’t sit up too abruptly. Get up slow and effortless. It helps to do positive things, and taking a stroll with exercise and fresh air may make you feel better. And keep you mouth clean by brushing your teeth frequently. There’s a strong correlation between taste and odor.
