Etymology

From Middle English gorst, gors, from Old English gors, gorst, from Proto-Germanic *gurstaz or Proto-West Germanic *gerstu (barley). Akin to German Gerste (barley) and Latin hordeum (barley). Also compare Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰer- (to bristle), whence Proto-Celtic *garwos.
